--Formatting a Diskette

  • Double-click the My Computer icon on your Desktop. Insert the diskette you want to format. Right-click the diskette drive icon and select Format.
  • Once the Format window opens, check the Capacity field. It should be 1.44MB. If you have a double-density (DD) diskette, it will only hold 720KB of information.  Therefore, change the capacity size to 720.
  • In the Format Type field, you must select the formatting option.  Quick (erase) will erase the files from a previously formatted diskette.  Full format will set up a diskette for use so that you will be able to write data to the diskette.
  • To make a “bootable” diskette, click the Copy System Files Only button.
  • The Label field allows you to name the diskette.
  • The Display Summary When Finished box tells you how much space is available on the diskette.
  • Once you select the options you want, click the Start button to begin formatting the diskette.
