--Downloading Files Using a Web Browser

Downloading files means to transfer files from a computer located somewhere on the Internet to your computer.  Many different types of files may be downloaded to your computer.  The important thing to remember is that you must have a program loaded on your computer that will read the downloaded files.  Also, many files will be “zipped” or compressed so they will be smaller is size.  Sometimes downloaded files will automatically “unzip” and other times you may need a “zip” program loaded on your computer to “unzip” the files.

  • When you find a file to download, you should have a link with the words “download copy”,  “download now” or something similar.

  • Click on the download button.

  • The file may automatically download into a folder or on your desktop.  This will usually depend on the configuration of your browser.

  • Once the file is downloaded, double click on the icon.

  • The type of file downloaded will determine if you will simply open the file, unzip the file, or actually install it on your computer.

  • Remember to use the Help section on your browser.  By going to the index and typing in “download”, you will be able to get additional information for downloading files from your browser.
